Counseling News

Wow! We’ve made it half way through the school year. Many students feel good about their success at Heath so far this year, yet others may have fallen short of the academic success both you and your student had hoped for. Either way, this is a great time to review the first semester with your son/daughter and develop a plan for success for second semester. Many middle schoolers struggle with completing assignments and turning them in. With a simple plan to get off on the right foot for second semester, your student can have a great second semester.  Following are some tips for academic success.

Check grades regularly. Parents and students can check grades online. Parents can call the school at 348-3418 to get your own username and password or better yet, have your student show you how to check grades using the student’s username and password. Teachers often do grading over the weekend, so a great time to check grades and missing assignments is at the beginning of the week.
Ask to see weekly Progress Reports. Every Wednesday, Heath sends home a weekly Student Progress Report. This is another good time to sit with your son/daughter and review their grades and look online to see if they have missing assignments. If they have missing assignments, help your child come up with a plan to complete those.
Create a specific homework time at home. Help your student come up with a homework routine that fits your family.  Some students like to “dig in” and get it done. Others may need to build in breaks to avoid homework “burnout.”
Think it through. Before your student begins their homework, have him/her make a to-do list. Have your student then number the tasks from toughest to easiest and start with the hard stuff. Save the easiest for last. This will help students finish on a high note.
Plan for projects. Teach your student to tackle a large project by breaking it down into individual steps. Spreading out the steps over time will help “get it done” on time—and it won’t seem so overwhelming.
Think about time. Many middle schoolers have time during class, before, and after school to complete their work. Encourage your child to complete their assignments at school.
Turn it in. For some reason, many middle schoolers who complete all or some of their work forget to turn it in. That’s a lot of wasted time and energy and leads to frustration. Help your student come up with an organizational plan for turning in assignments.

If you have questions regarding your student’s success, feel free to call the Counseling Office. Mrs. Sheen who works with all 6th graders and half of the 7th graders can be reached at 348-3423. Mr. Dobson who works with all 8th graders and half of the 7th graders can be reached at 348-3420

Let’s have a great second semester!
